John Ryan – A Retrospective

A rare opportunity to see the works of Captain Pugwash creator John Ryan (1921-2009) on display in his home town of Rye,  East Sussex.

This retrospective exhibition ranges from original classic book illustrations and humorous strip cartoons to hand-made, uniquely hand-operated animations for TV.  With over 80 items to be seen (many previously undisplayed) this lively display has something for everyone. Explanatory texts accompany works from six decades of creativity.

Characters include Captain Pugwash and his crew: Tom the Cabin Boy,  Pirate Willy,  Pirate Barnabus and the Mate; Pugwash’s arch-enemy Cut-throat Jake; Harris Tweed for Eagle magazine, Lettice Leefe,  Sir Prancelot,  Mary,  Mungo and Midge, Cardinal Grotti – and a host of others.
